I am excited about our year in First Grade. Here are a few notes about our class, our day at school, and expectations for our year.
Homework
Change in Dismissal Policy If your child has a change in transportation for a day(s), I must have a signed note from home. I am responsible for your child at school and need to know if there are any changes. Please DO NOT send a verbal message with your child. I must have it in writing. Changes cannot be made by phone, email, or text. In the case of last minute changes, you must come to the office to make that change. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however the children’s safety is our first concern. Thanks for understanding
Communication is very important! Please feel free to contact me through email or to arrange a conference at school. I would like to meet very soon to begin our year on the same page. Please read the newsletter your child brings home each week. You can also get up to date information and see what we are doing in class by visiting my blogpage at www.cartersclassnews.blogspot.com. Also feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. lcarter@berrien.k12.ga.us Other school information is available on the BPS website.
Schedule
Students may come into the building at 7:30 and either go directly to the First Grade duty room or go to breakfast in the cafeteria. The bell rings at 8:00 and children will go to their own classroom. Children are tardy after the 8:20 bell. Please be on time.
Homework
We will have regular homework in First Grade. Check the Homework section in the STAR folder your child brings home each day. Practice skills and on-level guided reading practice books will come home each week. Please return all homework and reading books in the Homework Folder.
Book Orders
We will participate in the Scholastic book orders several times this year. These flyers have very good (and cheap) books for independent and shared reading at home. Please send the order in an envelope with a check payable to Scholastic, or you may order online.
Money
Please send all money that comes to school in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and the purpose of the money. Lunch money should also include the child’s lunch number on the envelope.
Discipline
We use the STEP program. Each child starts the day on ‘green’. If he/she does not follow the classroom rules, they will be asked to move their name Green = “I had a great day” Yellow = “I must try harder to follow the rules” Orange = “I missed a fun activity today” Red = “I had a difficult day” (call/note home) OR if a child does an exceptional job following rules at a particular time, he/she may have the opportunity to move his/her clip up on the chart to “Good Job”, “Great”, or “Outstanding”!
Library
Every child will have a library card and will be able to check out books. When the required sight word lists are mastered, the student may begin to take Accelerated Reader tests on their library books to earn points and prizes. Word lists are in your child’s folder to practice at home.
Parent / Teacher Communication
We are looking forward to a terrific year together!!!
